I gripped the regulator in panic, breathing fast and shallow. There was only one thought in my mind:&nbsp;<em>Get to the surface. Now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart was pounding. My mind was racing. One more gulp of water, and I knew I\u2019d lose control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how my first try-dive began in March 2022 on Lanzarote, a volcanic island in the Atlantic. I had never been comfortable in the water. I was terrified of opening my eyes underwater\u2014hardly the ideal mindset for a future diver. Tried again. Mask flood. Keep breathing. Blow the water out through my nose. It felt chaotic, terrible\u2014but my instructor gave me the OK sign. I pushed through, swallowed some water, but I stayed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back home, I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about the experience. The underwater world fascinated me\u2014but the fear of that mask removal drill stuck like a shadow. Still, I booked my next trip to Lanzarote\u2014and this time, I signed up for the Open Water Diver course. I wanted to overcome this. And the pull I felt toward the ocean grew stronger every time I thought about it..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The decision to train my mind, not just my body<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the days leading up to the course, excitement and fear wrestled inside me. I needed a way to mentally prepare for that mask removal drill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my basement, I found an old sports psychology textbook from school. I read every chapter on mental preparation, diving deep into the principles of visualization, self-talk, and emotional control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I analyzed my thoughts before and during dives. And then I created my personal mantra\u2014one that would keep me calm and focused:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI am calm and in control underwater.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also found a guided meditation for beginner divers online, which helped me mentally rehearse the mask removal drill. And I practiced under controlled conditions in a swimming pool\u2014breaking the exercise down into simple, manageable steps to control my instinctive reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The defining moment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And then\u2026 it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I descended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again\u2014that same drill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I repeated my mantra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Took a deep breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closed my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let water flood into the mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Held the top edge of the mask firmly with two fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exhaled through my nose and cleared the mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It worked. For the first time. And it was one of the most liberating moments of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udded&nbsp;<strong>The most important lesson I learned:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental training in diving isn\u2019t a \u201cnice to have.\u201d It\u2019s often the difference between panic and presence. (1998)<\/a>&nbsp;shows that mental training, visualization, and especially targeted&nbsp;<strong>self-talk<\/strong>&nbsp;during stressful situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improves focus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regulates emotional responses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduces anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increases control in critical moments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udeab&nbsp;<strong>But be careful:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-talk is&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;just \u201cpositive thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Statements like&nbsp;<em>\u201cI love opening my eyes underwater\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;would have felt like self-deception to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A powerful mantra is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Realistic and connected to your existing strengths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Action-oriented and solution-focused (<em>\u201cFocus on each step. Switch to nose breathing and exhale.\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideally formulated in the first person or as a clear command<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My mantra&nbsp;<em>\u201cI am calm and in control underwater\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;worked because it built on a strength I already had\u2014I knew how to stay calm in stressful situations at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does this mean for you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture this: You\u2019re standing at the edge of a pier. It\u2019s your first night dive. The water glistens dark and silent. Your heart is racing. You ask yourself:&nbsp;<em>Am I really ready to dive in?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the moment everything is decided\u2014not underwater, but in your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf93&nbsp;<strong>Deep Dive: The study that changed everything<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Curious about the hard science behind this? All completed the standard PADI Open Water training. But half of them received something extra\u2014a targeted mental training program developed by Mount and Gilliam in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t just theory.
